This my first ever TarotBlog hop, and I have to confess…I have huge writers block! Typically, writers block happens when I have no idea what to write about- but this time, it’s the opposite! The theme, given to us by the wonderful wrangler Joanna, encourages us to talk about resurrection- transformation, spring time, new beginnings, and renewal. For me, there are so many possible things to write about with this topic that choosing just one seems nearly impossible.
Resurrecting Dead Tarot Decks through Arts and Crafts
For anyone who knows me, or who happens to take a peek back at the rest of my blog, I haven’t been writing much lately because I have been feeling so miserable and sick all the time thanks to a pesky autoimmune condition I was diagnosed with years ago but only recently began to really suffer from. Two days ago I underwent a somewhat new procedure to help manage the pain and make life more live-able, and already I’m noticing a huge difference. I’m waking up in the mornings feeling better, more energetic, and actually excited about the day. Each day seems like a new chance, new beginning, or new “resurrection” of opportunity, and I don’t want to waste it. I really want to live in intentionally and not waste a second of the day. Again, anyone who knows me can tell you what a challenge this could be…I tend to go off topic pretty frequently 
But what does all this have to do with tarot?
As someone who is constantly going 100 miles a minute in multiple directions, focusing my intention, not just focusing, is a huge problem. Part of the reason I got into tarot was to help me channel my focus and clarify my expectations for situations, because even meditation was difficult for me without something to focus on. If you consider each day a resurrection of opportunity, a new chance to achieve, do, be or exist, you’re presented with a daily opportunity and tarot is a great way to channel your energy, focus and drive.
However, there are tons of posts and resources available on this and I’m not going to get into that aspect of tarot…instead I’m going to focus more on the literal resurrection of a tarot deck, specifically ones that are incomplete or too used to continue being “reading” decks. I hate throwing them away, but I’m also one of those people who doesn’t like reading with an incomplete deck. I also get annoyed when the edges start to fray, cards get bent, liquid gets on them, etc. Fortunately, I’m big into D-I-Y projects and arts & crafts type activities, so I’ve come up with a few ideas for “resurrecting” a dead or seemingly unusable tarot deck:
- Practice your ‘borderectomy’ skills by trimming the border off the remaining cards
- Combine cards from multiple decks with mementos, pictures, notes, quotes etc to make your own deck. If you want to go all out, get some scrapbook paper and rubber cement and bond the cards to the paper and laminate to create your own deck.
- Tape remaining cards into your tarot journal or notebook and use as the basis for a mediation, journal prompt experience or jotting down keywords.
- Write a meaningful quote on them and carry them in your wallet or purse as a totem. Or, leave them in a public place to pay-it-forward with tarot and spread tarot around!
- Save a spaghetti sauce, salsa jar, mason jar or other glass container. Get some old crayons or a candle making kit, sage or other herbs, and heat safe acrylic or modge-podge like substance and make your own tarot candle
- Recover a sturdy box or container using old tarot cards and rubber cement, modge-podge or clear contact paper to have a custom container for your other decks. Cigar boxes work great for this!
- Recover a notebook or journal using the methods above
- Make old cards into magnets. Place on your fridge, mirror or throughout your house to get tarot inspiration all day long!
- Make a collage of favorite cards, quotes and keywords and frame it
- Keep a stash of cards to give to clients after a reading to reinforce the message of the reading or to remind them of insights gained during a reading
- Get some pretty embroidery thread or yarn, punch a hole in the top of the card and make a themed bookmark. Combine this with a note or quote and leave inside of library books or give to clients
- Sew a card into the lining of a bag or tote bag as a good-luck or good-energy totem. Or, get some sew-able clear acrylic and sew the cards directly on to a tote bag, lunch box, fabric case, etc.
- Get some printable labels and print your contact information on them and use old cards as DIY, tarot-themed business cards. This is especially great for smaller decks.
- Make smaller cards into jewelry or talismans
